Location: Set in a prime location on the corner of Main and Nicholsen Streets in Bairnsdale, well placed to accommodate those who would prefer some refreshment rather than following the other half shopping! Access has two steps and the entry at the side may be easier for those with any mobility issues, but there is also some “alfresco” seating in Nicholsen St with umbrellas to shade and/or protect you from the elements. Not a bad way to while away some time watching the world go by. Seating is varied with a combination of benches along the back wall, (very comfortable and room to spread !), tables and chairs in the middle and with stools and a bench at one end for those nimble enough to manage those, not for me though. Wash room facilities are located at the rear of the café, these are clean and well appointed. Service is either from the main counter or table service. Groups can be accommodated but I would suggest some notice be given in order to re- arrange tables etc.

Menu: The eats menu is extensive here and you can even order online for a take away, what a great concept! Food is typical of the current café style and includes for breakfast such items as Maroubra free range eggs, dench sourdough, chutney, or Maroubra free range eggs poached, sweet potato waffle, pulled pork, jalapeño hollandaise.

For those a little more fruity, green tea and mango smoothie, kiwi fruit, strawberries, peaches, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, yoghurt , and having satisfied to Gluten Free and vegan options, a Veggie Brekkie of two eggs cooked with mushroom and tomatoes, avocado, beans, ginger and thyme wilted spinach, potato hash on sourdough toast. If that doesn’t suit how about an Avo Smash, Nutella Pannacotta or Peanut Butter Pancakes. Oh I can feel the health kicking in!

Far too healthy for me , so let’s get to the real stuff, Brekkie Burgers, Maroubra free range egg fried, bacon, gourmet sausage, swiss chutney, dench brioche, or the whole deal the MR D Breakfast, be hungry for this one and it should last you all day, Maroubra free range eggs, dench sourdough, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, potato hash, beans, gourmet sausage, chutney. Wow just wow !
Having satisfied the brekkie people, now for those who just want a nibble, something a little lighter and later in the day. Bruschetta, aranacini (check the daily menu), house-made spring rolls or a mixed plate of prosciutto, ham, Sicilian salami, toasted breads, house dips, anti-pasto, arancini, lemon pepper calamari, which would cater for a party of 2 or 4. A range of burgers and baguettes will tempt you and here again the Mr D bloke has his special, you have to try it !

For full meals, the range again is wide and will cater for all tastes including GF and Vegan options. I will leave that for you to explore when you go for a visit or look on line and order a pick up meal, go on take the night off cooking and have a MR D experience. Kids meals are also available and are well thought out.
Experience: I have to admit this was a very spur of the moment visit, as was the shopping trip by the other half, so I was only there for a coffee, and a very good coffee it was. Having said that I will return to try out a fuller dining experience with a level of confidence gained from this flying visit. The service and cleanliness was of a high standard, the ambience relaxing and comfortable and just a darned good coffee. There is room to linger here, to relax and enjoy the faire provided, ideal for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, or just as I did for a coffee, and something a little sweeter if I could have got away with it.

As I have said, I was only there for an impromptu coffee, but I will be a definite return customer. The place just gives an air of relaxed confidence, staff pleasantly efficient, the place is clean, airy and with a range of seating styles to match the range of food and with evening meals served this place should become very popular.
