Anzac
Day 2020
The day
dawned early clear starlit and cold,
T’was
Anzac Day 2020 and we were all told
T’would
be like no other this year to celebrate
No friends
or companions nor old service mates
No
services ceremonies reunions and the like,
No
marches processions not even a hike
To the Cenotaph
or a Memorial stone
This
year would be different we would honour alone.
Our
annual remembrance simple this was the way.
Standing
alone or with family at home this Anzac Day.
A light
in the driveway, a fire out the front
We
gathered in thousands honour guard to mount.
In
honour of those who have given their all
In
battle fields muddy not fearing the fall
Which
was to take many on that fateful day
When the
Anzac tradition was born in that affray.
We stood
in silence to thank those who still serve
And
those who’ve given their best with vigour and verve.
We heard
sounds of bugle calls but the one I heard most
Was the
haunting the steady and mournful Last Post.
It rang
out as clear as the dawning of day
Drifting
on morning air until far away
To
comfort all those who gave of their lives
To sons
and daughters to husbands and wives.
We honour
their memory, we thank those who still serve
So that
we might be free and our peace preserved.
For our
families our kids this day ne’er forget
And next
year perhaps with new meaning
The
words
“Lest
we Forget”
